New roofs, reroofs and repairs in natural slate, clay and concrete tile, and flat systems in EPDM, GRP and torch-on felt. That includes the parts nobody sees from the pavement — ridges, valleys, verges, chimney flashings, back gutters and lead soakers.
Slate roofs round here rarely fail because the slate is worn out. Welsh and Westmorland slate will outlast the building it sits on. They fail because the nails go: ferrous nails corrode, slates slip, and you are left with gaps feeding water onto battens that were already past their best. That is nail sickness, and replacing slipped slates one at a time buys a season. Once a roof is shedding slates in more than one place, stripping and relaying is usually the cheaper answer measured over ten years.
Salt air off the bay shortens the life of anything ferrous, so fixings are copper or stainless rather than galvanised. Wind is the other one — uplift finds verges and ridges first, which is why we use mechanically fixed dry ridge and verge systems instead of relying on mortar that cracks and lets go. Stripping a roof is also the only honest chance to look at the battens and rafters, and you will be told what is under there before it gets covered up again.
